I wasn’t sure how long we had walked for when we came upon a house. It was small and secluded, and it seemed like a perfect place to hide out.

The only problem was I still didn’t know where we were. We could have been walking in the complete opposite direction of the way I wanted to go, and with my pain that was the last thing I wanted to do.

“We can stay in there,” I said nodding towards the house.

Nora seemed unsure about the idea but she didn’t say no. She swallowed hard and took a deep breath.

“We’ll just make sure it’s empty,” I said and Nora nodded. I didn’t ask, but I figured she had done the same thing before the facility had found her.

Even though she seemed nervous, where else would she have stayed, if not in a house? She took another deep breath as if trying to summon courage. But she didn’t need courage, I’d seen her use the gun, I knew she’d do it again if it came down to it.

“Come on, it’ll be fine,” I said waving her along.

Nora pulled out the gun from her waistband and held it close to her body. We walked around the perimeter of the house and tried to look in the windows. Most of the curtains were closed, but based on what we could see, it seemed as though it had been abandoned.

When there didn’t seem to be any signs of life, we approached the house from the backyard. I paused before we reached the back door and stared at the gun.

“What?” Nora said scrunching her eyebrows together.

“Is it even loaded?”

“I used it once.” Nora shrugged and slid the top of the pistol back to reveal a bullet in the chamber. She grinned, “We have at least one.”

“That’s better than an empty gun,” I said turning back towards the house. “Ready?”

When the gun made a tick, I turned back towards her. I raised my eyebrow and watched as she checked the magazine. She clearly was far more experienced with a gun than she had let on.

“What?” she asked when she noticed me staring at her.

“Nothing,” I said wondering what other skills Nora had hidden up her sleeve. After all, she had shot that person back at the facility quickly and accurately. “You seem to know what you’re doing with that thing.”

She took in a quick breath, “Who said I didn’t? I just never had to use one very much… especially on people.”

I widened my eyes and opened my mouth, but closed it again. Everyone left in this world probably knew how to use a gun to some extent. I hadn’t asked her a lot of questions about much of anything, but she could have offered up her experience level when we’d discussed our escape plan.

“We’re good to go,” she said and pointed the gun towards the ground, but I could tell by the look in her eyes that she was ready to put it up and use it if the situation called for it.
